Teaching Fractions

Jordan Said:

teaching interview- turning fractions into decimals....HELP PLEASE!?

We Answered:

turnign things into mulitples of 100
usng equivalent fromactions
i.e 3/4= 75/100 = 0.75

so your warmup would be a equivalent fractions exercise.

i would also use a visual using a hundredds grid ot a thousands grid. or those 10 blocks

get them with an application hook at the beginnign and have them answer it by the end
maybe use whiteboards for students to write their answers and so that you can see theri answers when they hold them up and you can assess instantly what they know,

Johnnie Said:

how do you get fractions amounts in money my math teaching was explaining it but kids were talking and she?

We Answered:

5/6 of 300 is 250. 3/4 of 400 is 100. 9/10 of 240 is 216. what you do is you divide the top number by the bottom number and times it by the whole number. ex: 5/6 of 300 is 5 divided by six, then times that number by 300 and u got your answer

Suzanne Said:

Whats a creative way to teach fractions to kids?

We Answered:

Use the kids themselves! Arrange them by shirt color (or give them jerseys or paper or something to group them together). In a group of 4 blue shirts, take away one blue shirt kid. Ask what fraction the one kid represents and what fraction the other blue shirt kids represent.

Randall Said:

in countries that use the metric system do they teach fractions in school?

We Answered:

Yes, at school we are all taught fractions, divisions, sub divisions and all say a half a glass of water, the gas tank is three quarters full etc. Also ask for a quarter pounder with cheese at Mc Donald's.

Laura Said:

Jessie Said:

Is it strange that I look forward to teaching my kids how to multiply and work with fractions?

We Answered:

Not strange at all. I can't tell if you're a parent or a teacher (or just looking forward to being one or the other), but it's obvious you enjoy children. The fact that you want your children to love learning makes me think you would be a great teacher, because that's the reason the great teachers start teaching in the first place.

I could go into a whole ranting speech about parents these days, but I won't. I'll just boil it down to the fact that parents don't want to take responsibility these days and would rather be their child's friend.
