Linear Algebra For Calculus
Gail Said:
intersection between linear algebra and calculus? We Answered:
Functional analysis might be a good area.....this is the study of vector spaces with norms on them, which allows you to talk about limits and continuity of functions etcSheila Said:
Can you study Linear Algebra before Multivariable Calculus? We Answered:
yes you can. I did but talk to your advisorKaren Said:
Is Linear Algebra required for Calculus IV?We Answered:
The first few sections of multivariate calculus is linear functions which involves matrices, images, determinants, planes, etc. But, you don't need to know a whole semester of linear algebra for it. It really depends. That's how the tri-semester sequence goes in our text. Sometimes instructors will skip the stuff that requires linear algebra.Jo Said:
What are some good undergraduate Calculus, Linear Algebra and Analysis books for self study.?We Answered:
Schaum's study guides are my favoritesAt any quality bookstore
Ken Said:
Can I take Linear Algebra with Calculus, or is it better to take Calc before? We Answered:
Although linear algebra doesn't require calculus, nevertheless, I would take calculus first. It will give you the mathematical maturity you need to succeed in linear algebra. I think most people would have trouble going directly from pre-calculus to linear algebra.Edit:
I just pulled out an old linear algebra book. It has a couple incidental references to calculus.
Sarah Said:
Are calculus and linear algebra dead branches of math in terms of research and discovery? We Answered:
The branches of mathematics are all intertwined. Separating them the way you have produces artificial compartments. In some sense, number theory is the natural extension of arithmetic, and number theory is all mixed in with abstract algebra and analysis. Similarly, analysis is the natural extension of calculus and analysis is huge, and mixed in with other subjects. Linear algebra, is the underpinning of all of linear mathematics, which overlaps heavily with differential equations, operations research, functional analysis, even statistics (e.g. multivariate linear models). Geometry similarly has mushroomed into differential geometry, projective geometry, algebraic geometry etc. The overlaps are huge. So, in some sense your question is like asking "are words obsolete because now we have novels?".Tanya Said:
Prepping for Calculus an Linear Algebra? We Answered:
I'm a Math Major and I've known some non Math Majors in your situation. I know some of those people spoke to the professors of certain math courses and were able to sit in without enrolling in the course. Of course this depends on the teacher and your schedule but you may want to consider a possible free solution.Another option is buying a cheap textbook (it doesn't have to be new) and trying to figure out the main points of the subjects yourself. If you need additional help I'm sure your school has a place to go for free math tutoring. Or you could try and find a private tutor to teach the courses to you if you have the money for that.
Good luck
