You could try expanding out the left side, collecting all the terms on one side of the equation, and then trying to factor

(3x^2+15)^2 = 100 + 3x
(3x^2+15)(3x^2+15) = 100 + 3x
9x^4 + 90x^2 + 225 = 100 + 3x
9x^4 + 90x^2 - 3x + 125 = 0

However, I don't see how to factor this.

So instead, you could use a graphic approach:

graph both
y = (3x^2 + 15)^2 and
y = 100 + 3x

Where they intersect is/are the solution(s).

Some of them, like the quadratic formula, I will probably remember for my whole life. But others, I forgot soon after I learned them, because they're just not that important overall. After going through algebra, geometry, trig, calc 1& 2, linear algebra, and now calc 3, there's no way I could possibly remember every formula I've ever learned. But that's OK, because with the internet, you can look up any formula in existence in a matter of seconds. It's just nice to know the more important and common ones off the top of your head.

It's actually easy to do the problems
For each example from the book, there's always a way to solve the problem and those kind of problems will be on the exercise with different numbers and variables. I think that all u need to do, in order to solve other problems, is to read the example carefully to see how they work it out, and then try to remember the pattern or steps or methods. That way when you face similar problems, u will see that there's a pattern to do it. That's what i would do :)
