Just for clarity now, let u=x², then
u² - 25u + 144 = 0
(u-16) (u-9) = 0
u=16, u=9

16 = x², so x = ±4
(x=4, y=3) or (x=-4, y=3)

9 = x², so x = ±3
(x=3, y=-4) or (x=-3, y=-4)

Thus your equations are....

A + C = 150.5
and
A - 5.5 = C

First, multiply your bottom equation by -1.

You get
A + C = 150.5
and
-A + 5.5 = -C

Then you add both equations to each other. You get

A - A + C + 5.5 = 150.5 - C
which simplifies to...
C + 5.5 = 150.5 - C

The rest is pretty simply algebra, but I'll do it anyways.

So you have the equation C + 5.5 = 150.5 - C

Add C to both sides and substract 5.5 from both sides to get

2C = 145

Then divide both sides by 2 to get

C = 72.5

Now take one of your original equations, I took

A - 5.5 = C

Substitute 72.5 for C to get...

A - 5.5 = 72.5

Add 5.5 to both sides to get

A = 78

The final answer is Atlanta handled 78 million passengers and Chicago handled 72.5 million passengers.
